Welcome to The Tile Edit: Where Modern Mahjong Meets Strategy + Style

Hey there, and welcome. I'm Lara, mahjong teacher, digital creator, and the tile-obsessed voice behind The Tile Edit.

Whether you've been following my journey on TikTok, on Instagram, or you just stumbled across this blog while trying to figure out what a "pung" is, I'm glad you're here.

What is The Tile Edit?

At its core, The Tile Edit is your go-to blog for learning how to play American mahjong with a modern twist.

This isn't your grandma's game night recap. (Although let's be honest, we love a grandma vibe.)

I created The Tile Edit to make mahjong approachable, strategic, and, dare I say, stylish.

You'll find:

  • Beginner-friendly breakdowns that actually make sense.
  • Strategy tips to help you move from "just getting by" to "confidently calling mahjong."
  • Behind-the-scenes thoughts on teaching, playing, and growing this game in a modern world.
  • Plenty of aesthetic inspo for your set, your table, and your mindset.

Whether you're a total beginner, an intermediate player stuck in a pivot rut, or a community leader looking to teach others, there's something here for you.

Why I started this blog

I've taught hundreds of people to play. Virtually, in person, over Zoom, on patios, at country clubs, and even during kids' naptime. And if there's one thing I've learned?

Most new players don't need more rules. They need more confidence.

So this blog is for the learners, the overthinkers, the note-takers, the closet strategists, and the "wait, am I doing this right?" kind of players.

I've got you.

Where to go next

If you're brand new and want a quick win, start with the free mahjong cheat sheet. It's a one-page reference you can keep next to your card while you learn.

If you already have the 2026 card and want help breaking it down hand by hand, take a look at Jillian's Mahj-el-tov Mastery Method. It's a complete 2026 card walkthrough, and a great companion for newer players who want a structured way to study.

And when you're ready for steady, year-round strategy support (live sessions, hand breakdowns, replays, and a community of players growing alongside you), the Confidence Club is where I spend most of my teaching time. It's the easiest way to stay close to the game between cards.
