You know how to play. So why does every decision still feel like a guess?

The Decision Deck is nine two-sided cards, one for each decision moment of an American mahjong game, in the exact order they happen at the table. It's a pilot's checklist, not a book. It assumes you already know how to play. Every card trades explanation for decision speed. $24.99, instant download, yours to keep.

You've put in the time. You know the Charleston. You can read the card. Then, mid-game, someone discards a tile you could call, or your hand stops working and you can't tell if it's time to pivot, or three exposures are staring at you and every tile on your rack looks dangerous. You know the rules. The problem is deciding, in the moment, with the table waiting.

Strong players aren't faster thinkers. They just know which question to ask at each moment. So I built the questions into a deck. When the moment arrives, you pull one card. The one for the moment you're in.

What's inside: the nine cards

  • 01 · The Deal Read. Sort the same way every time, notice what matters, and hold two or three doors open.
  • 02 · Charleston, Pass One. Keep, Maybe, Pass. What to protect and what to let go.
  • 03 · Pass Two, or Stop. The optional round, the courtesy pass, and the stop decision most players make on vibes.
  • 04 · The Checkpoint. Count your distance from mahjong and set your posture before the first pick. This card is the spine of the whole deck (framework by Michele Frizzell).
  • 05 · Pivot Triggers. Three signals your hand stopped working, and what a real backup hand actually is.
  • 06 · Calling Decisions. Can I call it (the rules), then should I (the judgment).
  • 07 · Joker Decisions. When to place, swap, hold, or let one go.
  • 08 · The Discard Check. Read the exposures, then rank every discard from safest to hottest.
  • 09 · The Endgame. Short-wall math, and how defense wins draws.

Rules on one side, judgment on the other

Every card is two-sided on purpose. One side is the law: the NMJL rules for that moment, verified against the league's own guidance. The other side is the judgment: how strong players actually decide. You always know which one you're reading. No more wondering whether something is a rule or just somebody's opinion.

One thing to know before anything else: The Decision Deck is a digital PDF download. Your files arrive instantly after checkout, and nothing ships in the mail. You print the cards yourself, at home or at a print shop.

Two print versions

You get two versions of the full deck: a full-color edition and a black-and-white edition designed to go easy on your home printer's ink. Cards print just under NMJL card size, so they tuck next to your rack without crowding it. Print on cardstock, trim, and if you want them to last, slip each one into a clear card cover (the same kind you use on your card).

How to use it

This isn't a study program, and there's no homework. Before the game, skim card 04. During the game, pull the one card for the moment you're in. They're numbered in game order, so the moment finds the card for you. After the game, re-read the one decision that felt shaky. One card per week is plenty. That's the whole system.

What else is in the box

Every deck comes with The Table Walkthrough: a written play-along where I walk through one full game, turn by turn, and show you exactly which card I pull at every moment and why. Read it once with your deck out, and you'll know how the whole system feels at a real table. It comes in both full color and an ink-light black-and-white edition, same as the deck.

Two ways to get it

Grab the deck for $24.99. It's yours forever, both print versions, plus the walkthrough, download today.

Or join Confidence Club for $19.99/month. The Decision Deck and everything that comes with it is included with membership, along with the monthly deep-dives that teach the deeper version of every card in this deck, live games, and the coziest mahjong community on the internet.

If you want the cards, buy the deck. If you want the coaching behind the cards, the Club is the better math. Both are the right answer for somebody. You know which one you are.

What you get

Instant download. 5 PDF files (color deck, black-and-white deck, cover and how-to guide, The Table Walkthrough in full color and ink-light black and white). Lifetime access. Print at home or read on any device. No subscription required.

$24.99, one time. Every rules face is verified against the NMJL corpus, and every judgment face is distilled from the strategy content Lara's Confidence Club members work through month by month. This is the decision layer of the entire game, in your hands, for less than the cost of one game night out.
